Horses foam at the mouth for a variety of reasons. It happens when there is excess salivation. In some cases, it is normal, such as exercising and eating certain types of food. In others, it is worrisome, like choking, poisoning, and rabies. The foam is created by a soaplike substance existing in the saliva called latherin.. If your horse has pinkish/ red foam coming from its mouth, that is a cause for concern. The coloring comes from blood mixing with the saliva. Oral injury can occur from sharp teeth, a foreign object, viruses, or toxic plants. An ulcer could also be the cause of the bleeding.

What is the Foam Around a Horse’s Mouth? The foam you see around a horse’s mouth while riding is due to how saliva production interacts with the mechanical action of the bit. Horses produce saliva, which contains enzymes to start breaking down food. The bit in the horse’s mouth encourages it to chew when riding.. Causes of Foaming at the Mouth. Foaming at the mouth can have various causes, ranging from innocent to more sinister suspects. On the innocent side, foaming can be a result of horse enthusiasm. When a horse is excited or worked up, their salivary glands go into overdrive, producing more frothy goodness than a kid with a bubble wand.
