Well, well, well — the latest iteration of Sight & Sound’s decennial poll is here, and if you thought the last one upset the applecart by displacing Citizen Kane at #1 for the first time in 50 years, this edition has flipped the cart over, set it on fire, pushed it off a cliff, and dropped a nuke on it for good measure.. Okay, maybe that’s a slightly exaggeration — the previous top two.. In 1952, the Sight and Sound team had the novel idea of asking critics to name the greatest films of all time. The tradition became decennial, increasing in size and prestige as the decades passed. The Sight and Sound poll is now a major bellwether of critical opinion on cinema and this year’s edition (its eighth) is the largest ever, with 1,639 participating critics, programmers, curators.

In order to get the complete vote counts from Sight & Sound’s 2022 ballots, I had to pull a lot of information. Well, all the information, really. The result was an enormous spreadsheet the byproduct of which is an ordered list of all named films. With 4 or more votes from either critics or directors being roughly 1,000 films. Voila! [For context, the Top ~500 films would be 8 or more votes.. Every decade since 1992, Sight and Sound has complemented its celebrated critics’ poll by formally sounding out the world’s leading directors on the ten films they believe to be the greatest of all time. Though it has always been global and inclusive in scope, the poll has expanded significantly each decade. In 1992, 101 directors voted; fast-forward to 2012, when 358 filmmakers took part.
